summertime with the Boldts - Berlin

Aaand Berlin.  I've said it before but we love Berlin.  We got a chance to take the Boldt family there and celebrate my 30th birthday too!  (Really?!  30?  Looks so much older in writing...)  I got to eat the first sushi we've had since we've moved to Prague, (living in a landlocked country is not so convincing for good sushi..), we went to see the Blue Man Group, did some shopping, bicycling...  It was fantastic!

We had such a great time with the family and it was really cool to have all of them here at the same time!  Thanks so much for coming to visit!!

summertime with the Boldts - Paris

So I don't think I mentioned it before, but it was EXTREMELY hot this summer.  Forty degrees hot.  Every city we went to.  Including Prague.  yikes.  So please excuse all the sweaty summer photos I will be posting.

After a few days in Prague, we jetted off to Paris for a few nights.  Yeah!  I LOVE Paris.  I had been once before, when I was in Grade 9, and it was with our school band and all I remember is going to the Gap and falling asleep during Les Misérables.  How sad.  Needless to say, I consider this my "first" time in Paris.  It was just beautiful and cultured and there were people riding their bicycles everywhere and the food was delicious and the wine was gorgeous.  I could just go on and on...

summertime with the Boldts - Prague

The Boldts came to visit us this summer for 3 weeks-ish.  We stayed in Prague for a bit, then off to Paris and Berlin.  This first set of photos is the Prague portion.  We took them around to see all the regular things (haha!  I say "regular" as if we do this everyday.  Well...  we kinda live here.  So yes.  We do.), and also we had never been to the Jewish Quarter or the zoo yet.  So we hit those places up too.  (Little did we know that we would end up going to the zoo THREE times this summer.  But it IS very cool.)  Here you go.  Prague with the Boldts.  Part One.

Christmas time in Prague

We got back from our Salzburg / Cesky Krumlov adventure on the 21st of December (sidenote:  Happy Birthday Tina!!) just in time for the last showing of "The Nutcracker" at Narodni Divadlo (aka The National Theatre).  It was the first time Mike and I had been to the theatre too and it was gorgeous!  Everything.  The theatre... the ballet... it was breathtaking.  It was a great way to get into the Christmas season and we felt so cultured ;)

One of the odd (in my opinion..) Czech Christmas traditions is carp.  Carp is their big Christmas dinner.  And how they go about this is they will typically go to the grocery store, where they will have large tanks set up with massive carp swimming around, pick which one they want, and either a. have it killed and bring it home for Christmas or b. buy it a couple days before, fill up your bathtub with water and let it swim around for a couple days until you want to eat it.  Ew.  My friend Pavlina, remembers playing with this carp in the tub when she was a little girl.  Naming it...  Then its Christmas dinner.

Christmas in Prague is beautiful.  Especially when you get to show it off to your family.  The reaction you get from people who haven't been to the city, always reminds you not to take the beauty of Prague for granted.

We did not have carp for our Christmas dinner.  Christmas eve we stuffed a chicken, had some veg and potatoes, made some appies, and celebrated.   Pretty late in the evening, we started to hear some music outside our building.  We looked and it turns out that a group had gathered in the grassy little nativity area and were singing carols.  Even though we couldn't understand what they were saying, it was really nice to join them for a bit and listen.

Christmas morning, Mike and I opened our stockings that my mom and dad had sent for us.  Now, stockings in the Krueger household are the highlight of Christmas morning.  There is always amazing little goodies that you never knew you needed and always a lot that just make you smile.  All of us "kids", (all late 20's and 6 total since we got married) sit around and open all the individually wrapped treasures in pure excitement. And no, that is not an exaggeration.  We truly, truly get psyched for our stockings.  And I'm not sure if we'll ever let mom stop the stocking tradition.  (She's been trying for the last 10 years...)  So it was a little sad for me not to be with my family on Christmas morning, and there might have been a couple small tears, but it was great to have a little piece of home.

We headed into the city on Christmas day, not sure what would be open and kind of hoping it would be quiet, but much to our surprise, tourists everywhere!!  I guess we really should have expected it.  Everything was open and in full force.  We came home in the eve, when it got too cold, and I was able to skype my family in time for their Christmas morning.

All in all, an excellent Christmas in Prague.

Salzburg, Austria & Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

During December, Al & Joyce came to visit us for 2 weeks.  They came a few days before school ended, so they could check out the school and tour Prague a bit, and then the Friday we got out of school, we made a last minute decision to leave asap for Salzburg!  (We had already planned to do this, just that we were going to leave later..)  This turned out to be more difficult than we thought as the car rental didn’t go as planned and ended up taking hours to find a car.  And then by the time we took off on our “5 hour” road trip, it was 7p and of course it took 6 hours.  So we go to our very cute little boutique hotel we had booked and found out it was not a 24 hour reception desk.  There was a note on the door with a phone number for a taxi company that apparently was holding our hotel keys and would come by and drop it off for us.  Whaaaa???!!!  A little bizarre, yes??  So Al tries calling.  Does not go through.  Al asks some random boys on the street how to call the number.  Does not go through.  We drive around Salzburg at 130am trying to find this taxi company/another place to stay/someone to help or guide us.  Eventually we found this lovely concierge at another hotel, who helped us get through to the taxi company (apparently when the taxi company is busy on a Friday night, their phone line is continusly busy on the 1 phone they have,) and demanded to talk to the person who had our key.  Anyhoo…  after all this, we headed back to the hotel at 300a to wait for the taxi with key to arrive.  Sat there for about 10 minutes until another guest was going into the hotel and Mike sneaked in after him.  Our room keys were taped to the inside of the front door.  Done!  So after an exhausting day, we still had enough adrenaline to have a bit of a night cap and drop into bed at 400a.

By the way, did I mention the entire time Al & Joyce were here it was hovering just above -20 degrees celcius??  The entire time.

So after “the adventure” of our road trip, we had a great time in Salzburg starting with a walk, then warming up and getting lunch at Mozart’s café, visiting the castle with hot bevvies, going inside for hot coffee, walking through the Christmas markets with hot wine, (notice the trend??) having dinner and then high-tailing it back to the hotel, cause we were SO cold.  I have never been so cold, as I was this winter.  Salzburg was really great, but I will need to go back there because it was way too cold to do the Sound of Music tour (which I really would LOVE to do).  However, I don’t think Al really would have put up with Joyce and I singing the Sound of Music soundtrack the entire tour either.  The road trip singing was probably enough.  ;)

After the day in Salzburg, another night and hotel breakfast, we were off to Cesky Krumlov, a small heritage town in the Czech Republic.  It was so quaint and had so much character.  (I find most of the places in the CR to have loads of character.  Mostly due to the fantastically old building and how they try to keep most things original instead of building new things.)  We spent our time in Cesky wandering the town (easy to do.  Its very small.), shopping, eating and drinking great beer at Eggenberg brewery, making friends with a local potter, visiting the local castle, (there is usually a bear “guarding” the castle in the old moat area, however it was too cold.  Even for the bear.), eating at a genuinely authentic Czech restaurant recommended to us by our new potter friend, and just enjoying each other’s company.

We headed back to Prague on the Monday, taking the scenic route.  As that is where our GPS took us.  And if I learned anything on the road part of this road trip, it is to always follow the GPS.
